Curriculum and Learning

Our pupils access a broad and balanced curriculum which is differentiated to meet individual learning needs and styles.

We aim to develop confident, independent and inquisitive learners, who will become active members of their community. We acknowledge our special responsibility in preparing young people for life in modern Britain.

Lessons are taught in small groups (averaging 6 pupils) by teachers with experience working with children with language and communication difficulties. In addition to this, Learning Support Assistants enable learners to receive significant individual attention. Modified language and visual approaches are used so that children can understand and develop the language that they need for learning. Visual approaches to teaching can also support learning and development of vocabulary.

Speech and language therapists work closely with teachers to understand and support each child’s difficulties and strengths. Where appropriate teachers and Speech and language therapists plan and deliver some lessons collaboratively, and work together to help students develop curriculum language.

With specialist teaching and integrated speech and language therapy, students who have difficulties with language and communication find that they can access the curriculum, make progress and see enjoy learning. 

The curriculum

A modified National Curriculum is taught with the core curriculum of English, Maths, Science and Computing/ICT being taught alongside Religious Education, Humanities, Drama, Art, Music, Design & Technology, Food Technology, PSHE and  P.E.   Pupils also participate in enrichment activities weekly which offer the opportunity for them to develop communication and social skills .

Homework FAQs 

Is the homework suggested on this table compulsory?

No – the homework suggestions provided on the curriculum grid are meant to be options which enable your child to enrich their education. They are not meant to cause anxiety or stress at home.

How is homework marked?

Pupils will be given appropriate feedback as decided by the teacher on the homework they complete. This may include marking using the school’s marking policy, use of WWW and EBI (‘What went well’ and’ Even better if’) or verbal feedback in class. Please contact the school if, as a parent, you wish to receive a specific type of feedback on a specific piece of homework.

How much should parents help?

Parents should help as much as they feel is appropriate, while remembering that it is the pupil’s work and that the pieces of homework are designed to be accessed at a variety of levels depending on the individual pupil. Homework is an excellent way to talk to your child about what they are learning and how to develop their language and understanding of the curriculum topic they are studying.

What should I do if my child is struggling to complete their homework, even with parental support?
