Poetry and spoken word project

Since January, Year 9 and 10 students have been working with visiting poet Des'ree to create their own spoken word poems. This term, the project culminated in the first-ever SMBS Poetry Slam, where our brave students shared their final pieces.
Some chose to perform live, while others presented pre-recorded performances. We were incredibly proud to see the creativity in our students’ writing and the confidence they showed on stage. It was equally inspiring to see the encouragement and support they gave one another throughout the performances, making the event a memorable celebration of their work. Our visiting poet picked out Keyshia (10 Wandsworth) and Hayden (9 Chelsea) as the stand-out performances and you can read their poems in this term's newsletter.
A week later, we attended the Poetry Sharing Event at the Criterion Theatre in Piccadilly Circus, where we watched performances from all the schools that took part in the project. Representing SMBS was Keyshia with her imaginative “time capsule” poem. Her performance was creative and confidently delivered, and she represented the school brilliantly! We also enjoyed watching performances from the award winning poet Shagufta K. Iqbal and beatboxer-rapper-theatre maker Conrad Murray.
