Computing Aims

The computing curriculum at SMBS aims to ensure students:

  • To develop an understanding of the use, impact, and influence of technology in the modern world, and its role in shaping society, work, and everyday life.

  • To develop computational thinking through the effective use of new and existing technologies, encouraging logical reasoning, creativity, and independent problem solving.

  • To develop analytical and critical thinking skills through computational problem solving and the evaluation of digital solutions.

  • To engage in practical experiences of designing, creating, and writing computer programs (both visual and text-based), enabling pupils to solve problems creatively and independently.

  • To experience and apply the fundamental concepts of computing, including abstraction, logic, algorithms, and data representation, building transferable life skills for a rapidly evolving technological future.

  • To prepare pupils for a technological future that is constantly changing, equipping them with adaptability, resilience, and lifelong learning skills.

  • To develop digital literacy, enabling pupils to express, communicate, and develop ideas confidently through information and communication technology, including strong digital oracy skills.

  • To enable pupils to become active, responsible, and informed participants in the digital world, capable of collaborating, communicating, and creating using technology.

  • To develop the skills, knowledge, and experiences in computing and related technologies that prepare pupils for further education, employment, and adult life as confident, capable, and independent individuals.

  • To ensure pupils use technology safely, respectfully, responsibly, and securely in a wide range of contexts, understanding how to protect their online identity and personal data.

  • To develop pupils’ ability to recognise inappropriate content, contact, and conduct, and to know how to respond to and report concerns effectively.

  • All pupils will experience this entitlement, and the majority will have the opportunity to gain a qualification in Computing.
