SMBS launches Independence Award Scheme

We are excited to be launching our own Independence Award Scheme this year which pupils will be working towards in Year 9, 10 and 11.

The Independence Awards have been designed to empower our pupils  by targeting their independence skills, fostering confidence, and nurturing a range of essential life skills.

The Independence Award Scheme will cater to pupils in Years 9, 10, and 11, providing a structured pathway to independence through its Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels. This multi-tiered approach ensures that students can progressively develop their skills.

The Award Scheme covers a diverse range of six broad areas, each carefully chosen to encompass various aspects of independence:

  1. Health and Welfare: Encouraging students to prioritize their physical and mental well-being, fostering habits that contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

  2. Going Shopping: Building practical skills for navigating shopping experiences, from budgeting and planning to making informed choices.

  3. Community and Leisure: Promoting active engagement within the community and encouraging students to explore recreational activities that contribute to personal growth.

  4. Out and About: Supporting development of confidence in planning and travelling safely.

  5. Taking Care of Myself: Focusing on personal care and self-management skills, empowering students to take responsibility for their own needs.

  6. World of Work: Providing insights into the professional world, workplace etiquette, and essential employability skills.

Through the Independence Award Scheme, we aim to collaborate  with parents and carers. We believe that fostering independence is a shared responsibility, and by working together, we can better prepare our children for the challenges and opportunities that adulthood brings.

The Independence Award Scheme is a testament to this commitment, ensuring that our students are well-equipped to face the world with confidence and independence.
