PSHE Aims

The PSHE curriculum at SMBS aims to:

  • To equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to lead confident, healthy, and increasingly independent lives in adolescence and beyond.
  • To develop essential life skills, including personal care, emotional regulation, decision-making, resilience, and risk awareness, to support pupils in real-life situations.
  • To strengthen oracy and communication skills by providing structured opportunities for pupils to express thoughts, feelings, needs, and opinions clearly and respectfully, using spoken language and alternative communication methods where appropriate.
  • To support pupils in developing independence and self-advocacy skills, enabling them to make informed choices, understand their rights and responsibilities, and seek support when needed.
  • To prepare pupils for adulthood by developing skills for further education, employment, relationships, financial awareness, and active participation in the community.
  • To promote positive physical, emotional, and mental well-being by helping pupils understand their bodies, emotions, and relationships, including personal safety and healthy lifestyles.
  • To encourage creativity and flexible thinking through discussion, role-play, real-life scenarios, and problem-solving activities that help pupils explore choices, consequences, and solutions.
  • To support pupils in achieving their personal and academic potential by building confidence, self-esteem, motivation, and a sense of personal responsibility.
