Art and Design Aims
The art and design curriculum at SMBS aims to:
- To engage pupils and foster enjoyment, confidence, and a positive attitude towards art and design as a form of self-expression.
- To develop practical and sensory-based skills that support pupils in exploring, recording, and communicating their ideas in a variety of ways.
- To encourage independence through making choices, managing materials safely, and completing creative tasks with increasing confidence.
- To explore the world of art and design, developing an understanding of its cultural, historical, and everyday relevance to pupils’ lives.
- To develop fine motor skills, coordination, and control through a range of hands-on artistic activities.
- To nurture creativity, imagination, and problem-solving skills, enabling pupils to experiment, adapt ideas, and respond flexibly to challenges.
- To develop oracy skills by introducing appropriate art vocabulary and providing structured opportunities to talk about their own work and the work of others.
- To support pupils in expressing opinions, feelings, and preferences confidently, using discussion and alternative communication methods where appropriate.
- To develop life skills such as perseverance, collaboration, self-reflection, and pride in achievement through creative processes.
- To equip pupils with practical creative skills that support participation in an increasingly technological and visual world.
