 Welcome                                   Term 3 February 2024

Welcome to this Term's newsletter. It has been a short term but pupils and staff alike have been extremely busy.

The Healthy Living Faculty was leading on activities and events this term; we have enjoyed having a go at the Healthy Habits Challenge each week and seeing the tasty and healthy dishes produced by Cooking Club each week.

On a related noted, we have been successful in securing funding for some outdoor gym equipment and this equipment has now been installed in our wilderness area.

Back in January, our STEM Club pupils had the opportunity to visit the BBC Earth Experience and came back full of enthusiasm.

At the end of term, we had our very first Parents' Day since COVID. It was fantastic to have parents and pupils back in school for face-to-face meetings with their subject teachers. Thank you for your cooperation and support in helping us to organise this. There will be another Parents' Day in April.

Finally, the much anticipated Staff Pancake Race took place last week. Read on below to find out who claimed victory this year.

History Club

Pupils accross the school have had an opportunity to participate in History Club on Wednesday lunchtimes this term where they have been watching extracts from documentaries and other audiovisual sources and discussing some big questions.

Fencing

Enrichment has run accross the term as usual and we have had our first group of pupils participating in fencing this year which has proven very popular.

Gangs Workshop

Students in KS4 took part in workshops run by St Giles Trust focusing on personal safety and risks in the community including gangs. Students were really engaged, especially by the workshop leader who shared their own experiences growing up in London and the challenges she faced. Students were prompted to consider steps they can take to keep themselves safe both in the community and online.

Outdoor Gym

We were delighted to take delivery of some outdoor gym equipment at the end of last term. This has now been installed in our wilderness area. We are looking forward to enabling pupils to use it as the weather gets drier and brighter over the course of the spring and summer term and fostering active heathy habits.

International Lego Day

SMBS marked International Lego Day at the end of January with a form group competition that brought students together in a fun and collaborative way. Each form embraced the challenge of building the best Lego bridge.

Every student in each form was encouraged to participate. The objective was clear: work as a team, think creatively, and, above all, have fun throughout the process.

The challenge of constructing a bridge sparked inventive thinking and collaboration within each form.

Below, right is the winning bridge, designed and built by 8 Putney and left a runner up.
