 Welcome                                   Term 4 March 2024

As we come to the close of another action-packed term, I would like to share some of the highlights with you.

Term 4 has been busy with trips and visits, workshops and competitions.

The Therapy faculty was leading special events this term and organising the after school Wellbeing Club. They also led activities for Neurodiversity Week.

The term kicked off with Science Week where there were special activities going on in science lessons related to the theme of Time as well as some extra-curricular activities offered at lunchtimes.

Some of our current pupils and two of our alumni attended a special prize-giving event where they received their Jack Petchey Awards.

We marked World Book Day earlier in the month and our Year 11 pupils got to test out their entrepreneurial skills for the Pitch Ready project.

We have also had an amazing term of talent on show in our school community! The School Council organised SMBS’ first ever Talent Show which took place on 15 March for Conmic Relief. Pupils from Key Stage 3 wowed with their singing and dancing and other talents.

We were also incredibly proud to see Year 7 pupil, Genesis get to the final of the Tri-borough Music Hub’s Future Sounds Competition.

For those of you who are observing Ramadan, we wish you a happy festive period and for those of you who are celebrating Easter, we hope you will enjoy the Easter weekend. We wish all our families an enjoyable and restful holiday and we look forward to seeing all pupils back at school on Monday 15 April for the start of the new term.

In lessons

English - Shakespeare

This term Year 10 and 11 students have been studying Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

In February, actors from the Globe Theatre visited SMBS to run a workshop exploring the themes and Shakespeare's language and then we rounded off the term off with a trip to the historic Globe Theatre in March to see the play brought to life in performance!

Students really enjoyed the modern twist on the play which featured impressive stage combat and some amazing BMX stunts! See below for a review of the play by one of our Year 11 pupils.

English - Greek Myths

This term Years 7 and 8 have enjoyed learning about Greek Myths and having a go at writing their own myths with heroes and monsters.

Year 7 pupils also had the opportunity to enrich their learning with a workshop at the Wallace Collection exploring and creating work linked to the world of mythical creatures.

Next term, Years 7 and 8 will be going to watch a performance of The Odyssey at the Unicorn Theatre.

PSHE - Y7 animal care

Year 7 pupils have been studying Animal Care in their PSHE lessons this term. They have enjoyed visits from 3 different pets over the course of the term - Iggy the dog, Prince the cat and Sir Taffy the tortoise. The visits have enabled pupils to interact with the animals and bring their learning to life.

Science Week

This term kicked off with our annual celebration of Science Week 2024. The theme of the year was 'Time'.

Students took a journey back in time in their Science lessons where they built Greek water clocks and Sand timers and explored how people used to tell the time before clocks were invented. Time was the essence of the film 'The Adam Project' about a young boy who worked together with an older version of himself in the future to correct mistakes made in the past.

Year 10 students learned about different body systems and how they are connected by building them using clay and putting them all together to make a 'life-size' clay human.

Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ review

We went to the Shakespeare Globe theatre on Wednesday March 20th. We were watching Romeo & Juliet and it’s good and bad.

When we entered The Globe, we were sitting down and we saw that BMX master. I didn’t know where he came from but he was showing his ultimate BMX skills and stunts and I was too amazed. I realized why he came on the stage because he is actually in the play and he was playing as one of the rivals. When I was watching the fight scenes some were great and some weren't. It was a bit brutal, romantic and inappropriate. When I saw what happened to Romeo and Juliet at the end it was sad for everyone but, for me I was not happy about that because those two love birds committed  suicide because Romeo thought Juliet was dead and Juliet thought Romeo was dead. It was a bad ending for me.

I give Romeo and Juliet 3 and a half stars.

Neurodiversity Week

We celebrated Neurodiversity Week from the 18th to 22nd March.

Neurodiversity recognises that all of our brains are unique, and that different ways of thinking about the world can bring exciting perspectives and new ideas. Pupils learned about different types of  neurodivergence such as Developmental Language Disorder, Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and many more. They created posters to represent their own particular interests which gave us all a chance to learn more about our school community.

More information about neurodiversity can be found here: https://www.neurodiversityweek.com/

Inclusive Youth Leadership SEND workshop

The Y11 Students were invited to a sports leadership event in Battersea. They engaged in a range of different sports and learnt the different ways a leader can provide sporting opportunities to those in schools and outside of schools.

They gained experience and knowledge about inclusive sporting opportunities and how they can adapt different lessons to cater for a variety of different needs.

London Youth Rowing

Students attended a rowing competition in the Copper Box Arena at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park where they competed against several schools in a series of different rowing races. Students showed excellent sportsmanship, supported each other throughout, and most importantly had a lot of fun. Students left feeling very accomplished and took home lots of medals!

Panathlon

Year 10 students took part in a multi-skills panathlon event at the Moberly sports centre where they competed against other schools. They were involved in a series of different sporting challenges, including bowling, curling, boccia, among many others. Despite the friendly atmosphere, it was a competitive event. Our students worked well as a team and gained second place with silver medals.

Healthy Schools Silver Award

SMBS has worked hard in the last 4 terms with the Healthy Schools London Awards Programme to improve children and young people's wellbeing at the school. This has been achieved through a range of in-school and after school activities such as Healthy Eating club and more. In recognition of this, SMBS has been awarded a Healthy Schools Silver award. The school is currently working hard to achieve a Gold award.

Future Sounds 2024

Year 7 pupil Genesis took part in the final of the Future Sounds 2024 competition. On 20 March, Genesis joined 7 other acts which had made it through from the auditions for a night of performances at Bushy Hall. Each act performed an original and a cover for a large audience and panel of judges. Genesis performed his original song, Omikimmy way and a cover of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. Three prizes were awarded on the night - Overall Winner, Best Vocal and Star Performer. The latter was awarded to Genesis with the judges commenting on the amazing performance he gave and highlighting his original song in particular as fresh and exciting.
