Welcome                                      Term 1: October 2024

It is the end of the first term of the new academic year. We welcomed our new Year 7 cohort in September. We are extremely proud of how they have settled in to secondary school, thrown themselves into new subjects and participated so enthusiastically in school life.

At the end of September, we took a closer look at all the many different languages spoken in our school community. Pupils shared some of the languages they speak at home and many participated in a poster competition for European Day of Languages, with some very creative efforts showcasing the incredible linguistic diversity in our school community.

Once again, pupils and staff wore denim and made a contribution to the Jeans for Genes charity, raising money, having fun and showing some style!

Year 8 and 9 visited New Scientist Live and got to see some amazing science and engineering up close.

Year 10 started learning more about the post-16 options available in the local area with a taster day at Westminster Kingsway College.

Year 11 organised a yoghurt sale on the last day of term to promote healthy snacks and try out their entrepreneurial skills.

If you have been into school since the start of term then you may have noticed the new planters that we have on the astro enabling us to extend and enrich our Food Tech and outdoor learning curriculum.

Enjoy the half term break and we look forward to seeing pupils back in school on Monday 4 November for the start of Term 2.

Science

Year 7 got started with experiments in the lab early on!

Pupils got to grips with scientific and safety equipment in one of their first practicals, finding out how the size of the different containers affects their weight when empty and filled with water.

Practical work supports pupils to develop their love of science and understanding of the scientific process.

Humanities

In Humanities this term, Year 9 pupils have been learning about different political systems; having a closer look at how democracy works in Britain including the role of MPs, the different political parties and how issues are debated in parliament.

Spanish

Year 9 pupils have been putting their Spanish vocabulary to the test this week and rehearsing and performing weather forecasts in Spanish. Some impressive vocabulary, skilled speaking and creative forecasting were on show. Well done Year 9!

Taster Day at Westminster Kingsway College

Year 10 went to Westminster Kingsway College SEND Taster Day to find out more about courses and student life at college. They enjoyed baking croissants, making soap, using the gym equipment and making music in the Media Lab. Students said they enjoyed the day and it got them thinking about what they want to study when they move on from SMBS.

New outdoor planters and seating for the playground

In collaboration with Groundwork London, we have been able to improve our outdoor areas this term with some additional seating and a number of planters around the school site where we are growing plants and food.

As part of the Greener Future project, the organisation provided and installed the seating and planters over the summer holiday.

We are looking forward to enriching and developing our Outdoor Learning and Food Tech curricula.
