Welcome                                   Term 2: December 2024

This term has been full of exciting opportunities for our pupils, including diverse theatre experiences . Key Stage 3 students enjoyed a vibrant pantomime performance of Aladdin, while others watched Mrs. Doubtfire and KS4 pupils went to see A Sherlock Carol to enrich their study of Sherlock Holmes in English this term.

We celebrated a win at the Active Westminster Awards for PE and School Sport, and Enterprise Week brought inspiring visitors into school from different careers and work places.

Year 7-9 students kicked off the festive season, ice skating at Somerset House, and our STEM Term activities included a busy after-school club and other STEM-related activities in lunchtimes and lessons.

We wish  all our families a joyful and restful festive period and a Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing pupils back at school on Monday 6 January 2025 at 8.30am.

Computing

Year 8 have had an awesome term learning about the coding application, Kodu and its features. They had the opportunity to create 3D worlds, add characters and props and program their behaviours.

Year 8 enjoyed exploring the application and had lots of fun creating a racing track game at the end of the term. Below left, track designed by Vitor and below right, by Hayden.

Hospitality Option

Year 11 pupils who chose a hospitality option this term have organised and provided a refreshment service for school staff.

Staff have been able to order drinks and snacks from a selection and have them made and delivered to them on Friday afternoons which has been very well received.

Pupils have learnt to look through the orders and prepare hot drinks to order and plate up snacks. Proceeds will go towards the Year 11 end of year activities.

Drama

This term Year 7 have been exploring Pantomime and the 'ingredients' needed to make a Pantomime. They have performed sections from Aladdin, Hansel and Gretal, Billy Goats Gruff and Pinocchio, as well as playing the ever-popular Giants, Dwarves and Wizards.

Year 8 have been building on their knowledge from English in Term 1, and developing their gothic horror performance skills. Pupils have been characters from Sally's Lament and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Performing in Monologues, duologues and group scenes based in both Halloween and Christmas town. We also had a lively class debate on which holiday was best -Halloween or Christmas!

Review of Aladdin by Adam Y, Year 7 Hammersmith

The play is about Aladdin who finds a magical lamp that gives him wishes. My favourite character was the genie because they were fun. In the play, first Aladdin found a magic lamp. Then Abanazar the villain trapped Aladdin. At the end of the play we all got up and danced. My favourite part of the play was when Widow Twerky was singing because she was funny. The play was exciting and a bit scary when Abanazaar trapped the genie. I would recommend this play to others because I loved the show.

Build A Bridge Workshop

Students in Year 7-10 took part in a workshop at school on Friday 13 December building a bridge in the school sports hall.

During this project students were engaged in an interactive construction workshop opportunity with FM Conway. Students had the opportunity to take on different roles and be mentored in these roles by apprentices from FM Conway to construct a bridge.

It was a really great opportunity for students to get a hands-on experience of careers.

This term we have been going to The Wallace Collection every Friday. We have been making masks. We has also been walking around doing designs. We also looked at King Louis XV and his girlfriend Madam Pompadour. Ayan said his favourite thing was seeing the old weapons. Laura likes doing the art designs. Leon liked drawing a helmet.

Ice Skating at Somerset House

In November, pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 stepped out on the ice at Somerset House's iconic winter ice rink.

For some pupils, this was their first trip to the ice rink and for others it was their second or even third. Pupils did not disappoint with their courage and daring. It was fabulous to see everyone pushing themselves. For some that meant getting on the ice for the very first time; for others it was holding on getting themselves around the rink or letting go and skating on their own. It was great fun and a super challenge for pupils and staff alike.

Thanks again to City Lions for providing the tickets for us.
