More cross curricular fun

This term, our teachers teamed up to blend subjects, making learning interactive, creative, and incredibly fun. Here is a quick look at the brilliant ways our students connected different subjects:

• Science & English (Year 7): Students became "living cells" in an active survival game, writing and thinking on their feet to keep their cells alive while staff tried to stop them.

• Art & English (Year 9): Pupils explored their identity and heritage, creating poetry and artwork based on the theme of "Roots."

• PSHE & Communication (Year 7): Teams were challenged to build a bridge for a toy car. With staff strictly forbidden from speaking, students had to communicate creatively, allowing natural leaders to shine.

• Maths & Drama: Students used dramatic action and video clips to master the concept of time, practising how to estimate and measure its passage.

• Protective Behaviours, English & Maths (Year 11): Students were dropped at different locations in the local area and had to use navigation, maths, and communication skills to successfully navigate their way back to school.

• Maths, English, ICT & PE: In a high-energy "I'm a Student, Get Me Out of Here!" challenge, pupils tackled puzzles and challenges to crack the ultimate code.

Stitching and sewing club  - pencil cases

Stitching and Sewing Club regulars have been working hard on making quilted pencil cases or pouches over the last 2 terms. These were tricky and involved several stages, including sewing together their chosen fabric squares and stitching through several layers of fabric and quilting and inserting a zip. The results were really impressive. Well done sewers!

In Food Technology this term, Year 10 has been exploring a variety of desserts from around the world. In our final cooking lesson of the year, we challenged ourselves by making a delicious fruit tart with crème pâtissière made from scratch!

Work Experience

From 15–18 June, our Year 11 pupils successfully completed a week of work experience, gaining valuable insight into a range of careers and workplaces. With placements across nine different settings, the week highlighted the dedication of the school in securing meaningful opportunities tailored to students’ interests, strengths and future aspirations.

Students gained hands-on experience in a variety of roles, including engineering at Oakray, healthcare at The London Clinic, primary education at Queens Park Primary School and Wilberforce Primary School, creative mentoring with City Lions, as well as placements at Willesden Library, The Wallace Collection, The Victoria and Albert Museum, and Wormwood Scrubs horse stables.

Employers shared consistently positive feedback, praising students’ enthusiasm, professionalism and willingness to learn. The experience helped pupils develop confidence, independence and valuable workplace skills.

Students returned feeling accomplished and proud of their achievements, with many gaining a clearer understanding of future pathways and career opportunities. 

Year 11 Graduation 2026

Our Year 11 students graduated with a fantastic Celebration Assembly on 25 June with family members coming to join. Staff and Head students gave speeches which acknowledged the journeys that all our Year 11 students have been on in their time at SMBS.

Students were tremendously reflective and shared their experiences and thanks with families and staff.

We wish them all the very best in their next exciting steps. We look forward to hearing how they are getting on.

Sports Day 2026

On 8 June, students and staff took part in this year’s Sports Day, enjoying a day of competition, challenge and celebration.

Students competed in a range of events, including the 100 metres, relay races, shot put, javelin and other athletic activities. Throughout the day, pupils demonstrated great sportsmanship, encouraging their peers, showing determination and pushing themselves to achieve their personal best. Many students were rewarded for their efforts with medals across the different events.

Staff also joined in the fun, taking part in a 60 metre race and the ever-popular egg and spoon race. Although there were plenty of egg casualties along the way, one determined competitor managed to keep theirs intact and claim victory!

The day provided a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their talents, try new challenges and enjoy some friendly competition outside of the classroom.

We are incredibly proud of all students who took part and contributed to such a positive and energetic atmosphere.

Celebrating Another Successful Year of Mentoring

Our students have reached the end of another successful year of mentoring, and it has been fantastic to see the commitment, confidence, and personal growth they have shown throughout the programme.

The mentoring programme has provided students with the opportunity to work with inspiring professionals from a range of different backgrounds, helping them explore their interests, develop their confidence, and think about their future aspirations.

This year’s mentors brought a wealth of experience and expertise, supporting students through meaningful conversations, guidance, and encouragement. From construction and apprenticeships to creative industries, education, history, transport, and the arts, students were able to learn from mentors who shared their own journeys and helped them understand the different pathways available to them.

The programme ended with our Year 11 Celebration Event, where Matilda from City Lions, who organises the mentoring programme, spoke to students about their achievements. She praised their commitment, professionalism, and the positive way they engaged with their mentors throughout the year. She also took the opportunity to thank all of the mentors for the time, dedication, and support they provided to our students.

We are incredibly proud of the way our students embraced this opportunity and the progress they made. We look forward to continuing this successful partnership and offering the mentoring programme to our new Year 11 students in October 2026. 

Equal Voices meeting

Leo, Celine and Tom represented SMBS at Equal Voices, the SEND student voice group they have been attending all year with other SEN schools across Westminster and RBKC.

The group reflected on what places and activities they enjoy in their local community and their aspirations for the future.

As it was the last meeting, they were treated to pizza for lunch but sadly had to say goodbye to Tom and some of the members from other schools who are graduating this year.
