 Welcome                                           Term 5 May 2023

As Term 5 comes to a close, it is satisfying to reflect on another term of creative learning and some fabulous trips and activities.

Our Year 9 pupils headed to Stubbers for another residential trip, challenging themselves in different ways - scaling heights, kayaking in the lake or having their first overnight trip away from home. As ever, our pupils rose to the challenges and we were incredibly proud of them.

Pupils in Years 7 and 9 had opportunities to enrich their classroom learning for Religious Studies with visits to the newly refurbished St Marylebone Parish Church and Neasden Mandir Hindu Temple.

Pupils across different year groups participated in the final stage of the Panathlon Challenge swimming gala at The London Aquatics centre in Stratford, coming home in second place. Congratulations to all of them!

SMBS had its official opening last week when we were delighted to welcome parents, governors and members of the community for a special event where MP Karen Buck gave an address and were treated to a tour led by some of our Year 11 pupils.

In PfA, Year 10s have been involved in a special work experience project with professionals in the HS2 (high speed rail) team.

The aim of this project was for students to:

1. Conduct research into what students at the school thought about travelling by train

2. Analyse the data and discover the challenges

3. Be innovative and think of an idea to overcome the challenges

4. Design and develop their idea

5. Present their ideas to HS2 employees

The research found that most students, even if they liked the train, didn't always feel comfortable because they found it too noisy and not easily accessible.

Our fabulous Year 10s came up with some excellent suggestions that drew from their data analysis and personal experiences. This included having at least 2 quiet carriages on all trains, bigger stations having a quiet room and a parents room and greater accessibility for wheelchair users and the elderly.

Next term the Year 10s will present their ideas in the hopes that HS2 makes these changes to support individuals.
