 Welcome                                           Term 6 July 2023

It seems incredible that we have completed our first academic year in our new premises on Herries Street but here we are! It has been a fantastic year at SMBS full of firsts - our first year in our new purpose-built site, our first after-school clubs; our first Year 11 Prom - to name but a few.

As well as the firsts, there have been lots of events and experiences over the course of the year which are part of SMBS history and traditions and we have enjoyed all of these and appreciated them in our beautiful new school.

Term 6 has been packed with lessons, activities and events which pupils, parents and staff have been able to enjoy.

Following a week of Work Experience, we said goodbye to our Year 11 pupils at the end of June. They had a packed week of activities including Transition activities at St Marylebone CE School Sixth Form, a trip to Clip ‘n’ Climb and a very special Prom event which the pupils themselves organised, as well as a wonderful Leavers’ celebration Assembly with pupils, families and staff.

We have enjoyed Sports Day, hosted an Open Afternoon for Parents and this week pupils have thrown themselves into Activities Week, visiting different places and participating in new activities, such as kayaking and taking the cable car.

Well done to all our staff, pupils and their families for a wonderful first year here in our new site. We wish you all a really enjoyable summer break and look forward to seeing you back on Friday 8 September for the first day of the new academic year for the whole school.

In lessons

In Humanities, Year 10s have been collecting information about the ages of discovery starting in the early 15th century. During their research, they came across visual sources such as paintings. Retrieving information from paintings was a very innovative and enriching process which gave students a visual perspective on the social life of the Portuguese and Spanish explorers.

In ICT, Year 10s have been exposed to real life problem scenarios. Aiming to use their ICT skills, specifically the use of Excel, in order to solve the problems and familiarise themselves with potential future workplaces and challenges.

In Science, Year 8 were learning about the Solar System this term. Some students used clay to build a model of the Solar System, using different colour paint to show each planet. Others used planet cut-outs to build a hanging mobile of the Solar System.

Students in Year 9 were learning about Chromatography and how it is used to separate liquids.

In other news

Term 6 is six and a half weeks long, 32.5 days and as always they are fully packed with lots to look forward to; from KS4 Workshops, Royal Observatory trips, Creative Mentor events, a performance at The Albert Hall, Open Afternoon, Sports Day and Activities Week, along with the usual full timetable of learning, there is definitely something for everyone in our school community to enjoy.

Open Afternoon

We have now been in our new building for nearly a year and as part of our reflection, we brought back the SMBS Open Afternoon. This happened on Thursday 13 July. Current parents were invited to have a tour around the school and see some example lessons as well as chat with staff including the Speech and Language Therapists. A wonderful musical performance ended the afternoon. The afternoon gave parents and careers an opportunity to see what a day in the life of a pupil; at SMBS is like and can help support conversations at home when the ‘What did you do at school?’ question is asked.

As part of the Open afternoon last week In Science, Year 9 students were examining samples using a microscope and trying to guess the object by looking at the magnified images. How many can you guess?

In Food Technology, Students baked and iced a Red Velvet Cake.  This took a lot of time and patience to decorate with the buttercream, but it was delicious

Activities Week

There’s always something going on at SMBS. The final week sees our annual end of Term Activities. Trips include bowling, the zoo, laser tag and a coach to Southend. The organisation and energy needed for these dates is mammoth and everyone involved works really hard at making sure the pupils get the most out of the activities they have chosen to do.  This is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s on at St Marylebone Bridge School and I want to acknowledge all the hard work of all the staff from the reception team who send out the parent correspondence, to the kitchen staff who make sure packed lunches are ready for the day ahead to the adults working alongside the pupils!
